Miladhunmadulu Dhekunuburi (Noonu Atoll)
The Northern Paradise Islands of Maldives
Miladhunmadulu Dhekunuburi is also known as Noonu Atoll, and it is located west of Addu Atoll and north of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, where land and sea meet. This atoll, with a land area of 128 square kilometres and a population of over 30,000, exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of nature and community. The administrative capital of the atoll is Manadhoo and Hoarafushi is a popular tourist destination while Naifaru serves as a commercial centre filled with shops and restaurants.
Within the Noonu Atoll's shelter, history dates back more than 2000 years. It is believed that the first settlers came from Sri Lanka and India and established the foundation for a cultural mosaic. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Noonu Atoll was a thriving commercial hub. Even World War II left its impression on Hoarafushi Island, as the British established an airbase there.
